Resurrecting an Australian icon
How the Waltzing Matilda Centre is being restored to its rightful place as an icon of Australia’s national history and social fabric. The popular museum was lost to fire in July 2015, making headlines across the country. The place that honoured Australia’s unofficial national anthem was gone.
A vision delivered
This unique project tapped the design expertise and service excellence of the best people and companies in their field to deliver a 21st century icon in Winton. The project was brought together by Winton Shire Council and the innovative capabilities of LGIS (Local Government Infrastructure Service), now operating as Peak.
Making it happen
Reinventing an iconic tourist attraction such as this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. It is being built to be a best-in-class 21st century venue to provide an outstanding visitor experience and deliver sustainable tourism employment for the residents of Winton.
To get there, Peak assisted Winton Shire Council to ensure the insurance and wider grant funding was sought to drive the best imaginable outcome. The rebuilding of the Waltzing Matilda Centre is a major project of national significance, funded collaboratively by Winton Shire Council and the Queensland and Australian Governments, with the assistance of Peak.
The task was to create an authentic experience through ‘magic realism’
Rigorous curatorial research was conducted and leading 21st century technology has been employed to create a unique visitor experience in a contemporary museum environment that is both entertaining and enlightening. An experience for all senses using sound, light, multimedia, and colours of the outback.
The Waltzing Matilda Centre will be a centerpiece of regional tourism in Queensland and Australia far into the future, at the same time generating interest in other essential Australian experiences.
The Centre will capture the spirit of Waltzing Matilda, the outback and its people, once again drawing visitors to Winton from all over Australia and the world.
The Waltzing Matilda Centre, and the environment it cohabitates with, is testimony to the community’s resilience and the expertise and integrity that has been poured into this project. It is this level of commitment and achievement that makes us proud to welcome Local Government Infrastructure Services into the Peak group.
